Tools/Applications A general group of new tools and technologies (t&t) have been “created” to build Web 2.0 applications. Web 2.0 is about creating rich information environments. It’s not about one guy posting HTML to a webpage – it is about a group of people building a community of information together.
Some of the t&t have been around a while – but now leveraged to be much more effective and efficient. These tools were created around the idea that the people who consume media, access the Internet, and use the Web shouldn’t passively absorb what’s available; rather, they should be active contributors, helping customize media and technology for their own purposes, as well as those of their communities.
What tool and technology categories are there?
Publish and Share Information (CMS)
- Blogging – A blog is a website where entries are written in chronological order and commonly displayed in reverse chronological order. “Blog” can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog. Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic.
- RSS – An RSS document, commonly called a “feed,” “web feed,” or “channel,” contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favorite web sites in an automated manner rather than visiting them on a regular basis. RSS formats are specified using XML, a generic specification for the creation of data formats.
- Tags – A tag is a keyword or term associated with a piece of information (a picture, a geographic map, a blog entry, a video clip etc.). The tag describes the item enabling keyword-based classification. Tags are usually chosen informally and personally by the creator or consumer of the content.
Community Building
- Social Networking – Is loosly defined as a community of people who share interests and activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others. Most social network services are primarily web based and provide a collection of various ways for users to interact, such as chat, messaging, email, video, voice chat, file sharing, blogging, discussion groups, and so on.
- User Generated Content – User generated content (UGC) refers to various kinds of media content produced by end-users.
Collaboration
- Wiki – Allows users to easily create, edit and link web pages. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites, power community websites, and are increasingly being installed by businesses to provide affordable and effective Intranets or for use in Knowledge Management.
Examples: Deki Wiki, Wetpaint, MediaWik
- Instant messaging (IM) – Is a form of real-time communication between two or more people based on typed text.
- Discussion Forums – A web application for holding discussions and posting user generated content. Discussion forums are also commonly referred to as web forums, internet forums, message boards, discussion boards, (electronic) discussion groups, discussion forums, bulletin boards, fora (the Latin plural) or simply forums. The terms “forum” and “board” may refer to the entire community or to a specific sub-forum dealing with a distinct topic.
- Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP – pronounced voyp) – Sometimes called IP Telephony, Internet telephony, Broadband telephony, Broadband Phone and Voice over Broadband is the routing of voice conversations over the Internet or through any other IP-based network.
Customize
- Mashup – a web application that combines data from more than one source into a single integrated tool; an example is the use of cartographic data from Google Maps to add location information to real-estate data from Craigslist, thereby creating a new and distinct web service that was not originally provided by either source.
- Widgets/Gadgets – A portable chunk of code that can be installed and executed easily by an end user.
