Think upgrade: The ever changing web

22 04 2008

Niall Kennedy says Web 2.0 is just like it appears on the page. It’s just text and numerals that make up a name that people remember and can brand. He says, and I agree, it is more of a symbol for the constantly changing web.

Whatever you are doing now, there is something you need to be doing tomorrow that’s already being done. Think upgrade. Think how I am going to change in the very near future.

Kennedy led at workshop at the Web 2.0 Expo on best practices. It wasn’t exactly what I had hoped it would be, but I did take some points that are worth sharing. He broke his lecture into three parts:

  • Expressive HTML
  • Syndicated feeds
  • Widgets

In plain English, Kennedy put it this way:

  • Built your web page using acceptable standards while expressive language to define everything
  • Push dynamic content out in an organized way everywhere
  • Built cool ways for people to use your content anywhere and everywhere they are

The first problem is how you are discovered. The second problem is for users to figure out how great you are.

He hasn’t updated at this moment, but Kennedy is going to put some links at del.icio.us on all three areas: HTML talk, feeds, and widgets.

If you are a real tech geek here are some other things Kennedy talked about that might be worth a google search: hCard, hCalendar, hReview and a lot on microformats.

its really hard to think of a web 2.0 application that dont have these three major components!. BUT!, i’m afraid that by saying, ALL WEB 2.0 APPLICATIONS SHOULD HAVE THESE THINGS!, we would limit the imagination of creative people and their apps!. Further more, we could confuse a young aspiring .com millionaire into thinking that YOU MUST HAVE THESE THINGS OR GO TO HELL.

They are fairly cool rules on thumb!, but i would be hesitant NOT to mention the other ways a web 2.0 could be built!.
